Volunteer opportunities:

A volunteer opportunity for a friend of Dalits to work in Nepal

Dalits refer to the traditional occupational caste people who are most oppressed among the population in Nepal as a result of hierarchical caste discrimination, socio-economic and political exclusions, illiteracy, poverty and/or the practice of social evils, such as untouchability, rampant for centuries.

We are seeking a volunteer from North America who is a self-starter, and motivated to help the oppressed communities in a developing country. The volunteer willing to work independently in a Dalit village in Nepal has a short-term or longer term opportunity to educate the Dalit men, women and/or children to make the differences in their lives, contributing towards their capacity building and eventual empowerment. He/she has an inclination to write, as there exists a potential opportunity to study the living conditions and culture of oppressed communities in rural Nepal unknown to the outside world, and to write a story or even a book about them for publishing in the western countries. He/she may apply for funding from any governmental or non-governmental organizations, both in Nepal and abroad, to support his/her projects for helping in income generation activities of Dalit men and women in the village. An accommodation, moderate by the rural standard of Nepal, to live in the village will be provided free to the volunteer for the period of his/her stay in the village. A non-governmental organization to host the volunteer, and to support for his/her visa or funding applications, and a guidance of Dalit intellectuals facilitating his/her work in the village will be available.

Interested person may contact the web-coordinator, nepaldalitinfo at: info@nepaldalitinfo.20m.com.
